United State of America - a Representive Republic not a Democracy
Many people refer to the United States as a Democracy and one of the party the "Democratic" party.
This is not true. United States is a Representative Republic not a Democracy. There are currently two political parties, the Republican party and the Democrats. There are three branches of government:
- Legislative - the House of Representitives (elected Congressman/Congresswoman) and the Senate (elected or appointed Senators)
- Executive - the President and the Vice President
- Judicial - the Supreme Court
A simple way to explain it is that the Legislative Branch can pass laws, the President can sign it into law or veto it (although the President have limited powers, executive orders, that are not part of the legislative process).
Once a law is passed by the Legislative Branch and signed into law by the Executive Branch (the President), the Judiciary Branch (the Supreme Court) enforces it and hopefully based on a strict interpretation of the United States Constitution.
The United States is governerned by the Constitution. Within the Constitution, it laid out the Branches of Government and the Separation of Powers. There are many source that can help one understand the Constitution.
